Marathon 40KM
Forty demanding kilometres on a highly technical terrain! A route for experienced mountain runners, with 2,504 meters of altitude difference, which despite its difficulty is a constant choice for many athletes since 2010. According to the runners’ impressions, it remains one of the most enjoyable marathon routes in Greece.
In this year’s 13th edition, the route has been enriched with a magnificent descent from Kalyves to the Vyros Gorge, where the view is breathtaking. And after the descent? Get ready for a kilometre of ascent through the Vyros gorge, passing through Stenema – the gorge’s artifact. Here, every step is a new discovery, a story told by nature.
Vyros is not only a paradise of natural beauty, but also a living historical treasure, where the ancient Royal Road from Sparta to Kardamyli once passed through. It is worth noting that 2/3 of the race paths pass through the Natura 2000 protected area.
The passage through Dubitsia is also an emblematic part of the race and of the protected area: it is a plateau with special flora and remains of ancient times. Terraces, armoury, buildings and cisterns make up the immaculate natural beauty of the landscape. Dubitsia remains one of the “secret” corners of the Taygetos which, rightly, has been described as a “Wildlife Sanctuary”.
The start of the race takes place in the suburb of the old primary school where the secretariat is located, at 8:00 am on Sunday morning.
